The Sea Anglers Match Federation has just sent out its early year newsletter and membership forms. As a founder member it’s a bit sad to see interest in SAMF dwindling although, it is the big match scene that has suffered a drop in interest and numbers in recent years. There are now two types of match angler, those that fish the opens and those that fish club events. This has come about because of the domination of the top match anglers at Open events in recent years. The matchmen have just become too good and the average angler feels he cannot compete. This is especially the case with catch and release, measure and return and small fish events.
Meanwhile the clubs have thrived and many have switched away from out and out bag weight to biggest fish to decide events which promotes a greater influence of luck and lessens the domination of the best anglers. To a degree it’s successful, but personally I think there is room for all kinds of events including rovers, pegged, catch and release, species, specimen, big fish and more. However, here is news of a system that may shock a few matchmen.
Last week I met a pal just back for a week’s holiday after immigrating to New Zealand. There he told me sea anglers have got around the problem of matches being dominated by the top rods by introducing a system that decides the match winner on the average fish caught – Think about it, all anglers weigh in their fish and the average size fish of the total caught is the winner. Obviously the skill is in catching a fish of a size that is likely to be the average – Looks like I will never emigrate to NZ damn silly idea if you ask me!

Club match anglers - Look out for the New Clubman competition that starts in Sea Angler magazine from May 1st – It’s a National league for club match anglers and it is organised via the internet and by e mail. Lots of angling clubs throughout the Country are entering all their competition fishing members, in effect it puts your club championships in the spotlight and includes a team event. Entry forms are available in Sea Angler magazine or you can enter directs by e mailing me with teams and anglers details, or a copy of the event rules: alankyates@aol.com.
Out on my local pier at Folkestone for a midweek evening match last week it proved a real scratch. Lots of undersized pin whiting, miniscule dabs, rockling, just goer pout and the best fish, a dogfish of 800 grams. I won the event with ten fish including the lucky dogfish for a total of 1.980kg, a pretty dismal return but that’s March. Around the UK coast it’s as bad – I know because I compile the prospect pages for Sea Angler Magazine every month and currently shore and boat angling enthusiasm is at its lowest ebb of the year. Rockling, dabs, pin whiting all fish that do nothing for the shore angler. Only the matchman can be serious or excited up by such tiddlers. My advice to freelance shore anglers, and there is a lot still fishing, is to forget big cod and look towards the spring for some better fishing, the codling, plaice and rays are coming. Other than that try a match - Scratching to many matchmen is what makes this time of year extra special. We know the rewards are going to be small fish, but getting any fish to take your bait is very often the challenge.
On the pier I fished with three Gemini Genie booms, 9.1kg Amnesia snood line and size 2 Fox Power Point MA hooks. I fit the booms using rig stops so that each boom can be altered in an instant and find this a great tactic for the pier because when casting short hooks on a fixed trace can be off the sea bed away from the fish. With an Adjusta rig (that’s my name for the rig with all snoods or booms fixed with rig stops) each hook snood’s position can be changed at will. Some days the hook below the rig catches others occasions the hooks above the lead score, but with the adjustment you can change the rig to suit quickly without having to change the complete rig. Recently I have been catching the bonus fish on the hook below the lead which seems to get less attention from the pin whiting, could be coincidence but it’s proved valuable for me.

THE UK-based Marine Conservation Society has joined a new initiative from Google Earth which allows scientists to track the movement of fish from high above.
Google, the global internet search engine which has become famous for allowing users to pinpoint virtually any spot on the planet, has now devised a Google Oceans offshoot which features a map layered where most of the world's most sustainably sourced kinds of fish come from.
In a statement, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said it had joined the new initiative and added that it was "proud and tremendously excited" by the sheer power of Goolge Ocean on the Google Earth site.
MCS's first Google Map layer shows the fish available to consumers that can be obtained without risk of depleting stocks - a positive message to accompany the launch of Ocean on Google Earth. The new features will help bring the ocean to life in homes, businesses and classrooms in a more visual form than ever before".
It is also expected that the the new venture will eventually help fishermen to catch species which are sustainable and not under serious threat of extinction. There is even a special fish tracker which lets users follow the path of shoals - and even individual fish, if they are tagged.
Meanwhile, Carl Gustaf Lundin spokesman for the renowned International Union For the Conservation of Nature, said: 'With 'Ocean in Google Earth' everybody can see the unbelievable beauty of our marine life and how incredibly threatened it is.'

What lurked in the depths, now is going to haunt your boat.
Be careful what you hook up. Aside from picking some vicious industrial garbage, you can bring to the surface some strange and unmentionable things. Most fishermen will happily brag about an extraordinary big fish (and we'll show plenty of those in this article). But sometimes the catch is so bizarre, that they'd rather try to forget it over a drink or two.
"Larger than life" (but hopefully still real) catches
We all know that the size of our largest catch is only limited to how wide we can stretch our arms, and how gullible your friends are. A picture would usually prove your story, if you don't mind occasional "this is Photoshop... I can tell by the pixels" comments:
(a whale shark, not that big either)
Catfish the size of a small car? Well, almost.

This is, by the way, officially the largest freshwater fish ever caught...
Here are more record catfish catches: (images credit: euro-som.de)
This one was caught in France: 106kg, 2.5 meters
Spain: 101kg
Germany: 83kg, 2.2 meters
Kazakhstan: 130kg, 2.6 meters

Just make sure not to go swimming in these waters, as this kind of fish indeed is known to attack humans (the only freshwater fish in Africa that would do so) -
This company will set up a fishing expedition for you. There is plenty of toothy fish in these waters:

Fish Tales
This fish was given the opportunity to speak out (as part of 1945 research). Must be some hair-raising tales, judging by how scared it looks.
After years of urging the EU to adopt sensible conservation measures and being ignored, UK anglers are turning on Brussels in anger at ridiculous proposals to bureaucratise their sport and to criminalise anglers who fail to tell them what they have caught.
John Leballeur, the chairman of the Bass Restoration Team of the Bass Anglers’ Sport Fishing Society said “Over the years, members have spent much of both their own and the Society’s money on futile trips to meet with EU politicians and officials to press the case for measures to preserve our fish stocks so that there will be sport for future generations of anglers to enjoy, as well as ensuring robust fisheries that can support both recreational and sustainable commercial fisheries.
We have always been greeted warmly and had our proposals accepted with promises of follow up actions that have afterwards never seen the light of day.
Just as scientific evidence presented by ICES is discarded each year when the EU sets quotas for how many fish can be taken from the sea, leading inevitably to fewer fish, and those that remain becoming smaller, year upon year.
And now we have these entirely inappropriate proposals to regulate Recreational Sea Angling contained in ‘Article 47’.
Not only do these measures, if implemented, have the potential for destroying many businesses and livelihoods in the UK economy, they come as an ultimate insult to the Recreational Sea Angling sector which is widely acknowledged as having a minimal impact on fish stocks, and which has been at the forefront of calling for meaningful conservation measures where these can make a real difference.
The catch of anglers is insignificant when compared to the amount of fish dumped over the side by fishing vessels. It’s like trying to change the washer on a tap, when the mains pipe has burst and is flooding the house.
“Stop telling us what you are going to do to us, and start truly listening to us” is the message that BASS is sending to Brussels.

This season has been a late one; November did not have the large numbers of fish coming through, raising 3 to 6 blues a day.
The 24th November Helio and friends fished a couple of days, the first day they released 2 blues one over 700 lbs and the next day release 2 more with 300 and 400 lbs.
The Tournament this season was a small one with 5 boats from Salvador showing up, Spedatce from Transamerica Hotel and Adrenalina from Canavieiras. The first day fishing most of the boats raised 3 blue marlins and a few sailfish. Danny and Rainer were fishing on the Adrenalina. Danny hooked a blue marlin early and after a 35 minute fight had a nice blue to the boat with 742 lbs/ 333 kg. Later he had another nice marlin on around the same size but pulled the hook after a few minutes.
The next day was a little slower with most boats catching a marlin and a couple of sailfish. Adrenalina caught another marlin giving us first place in the tournament, Dodo IV second with 2 released marlin and Namorada II 3rd place with 2 released sailfish. The first week of December had good fishing with Kai and Rainer from Germany, 15 blues in 4 days, releasing 9 marlin and 2 sailfish. The last day releasing 4 marlin and 2 sailfish.
Marco Paulo and Tiago from São Paulo had a great day on the 13th; Tiago hooked up to a nice marlin, the fish jumped down sea and ran half a spool of line off the reel after running down for 1 nautical mile, we caught up to the marlin, Tiago then fought the marlin close to the boat for another 40 minutes and finally released the 900 lb marlin. Later Marco released a marlin around 500 lbs.
The 28th Rene and friends fished releasing 2 marlin one around 600 lbs.
The 4th of January Jorge and his daughter were in for a great day raising 10 blues and releasing 5 the largest around 450 lbs.
The Tyson’s Pride is here from the U.S. for six months. The same day fishing alongside Adrenalina they raised 12 blues, released 6 and caught 3 yellowfin tuna all around 200 to 250 lbs. Two days before they raised 8 and released 5.
Tysons Pride, a 75 ft Merrit with a 100 ft mother ship Horrizon arrived at the end of November and has had some great fishing. They have been tagging marlin with satellite tags; one of two tagged of Ilhéus traveled 75 miles to the east and the other traveled 180 miles south in ten days. In January another game boat and mother ship will be fishing here as well the Hooker and Madam will be here for a few months.
As you can see the season is a late one this year with lots of marlin here in January, and we are expecting great fishing until March and even April. The large yellowfin tuna showed up in November this year and are still here in January. This is a good sign as the large tuna are normally here only for a month. The weather has been good most of the time with lots of bait on the bank and good current, which is what makes Canavieiras one of the great blue marlin fishing grounds in the world giving us a 6 month season and fishing all year round weather permitting.
Tight Line to all and a great new year. Shawn Wallace
In the tray of an old metal tackle box That my grandparents use to share, I found a chain of swivels And I asked them why it was there.
They looked at each other and then looked at me With wisdom and a smile so warm, And told me the reason for the swivel chain And how the idea was born.
They recalled how they and many of their friends Were taught to fish when they were kids. And why they will always remember What those caring anglers did.
So as they in turn, taught others to fish They started a chain made of swivels one day To remind them of each new angler That they had helped along the way.
“Each swivel has a story Our angling days are done. But the chain should never end It’s our duty to pass it on.”
“You are the newest swivel Our angling legacy is complete Now you must share your fishing passion With others that you meet.”
Their fishing days are over now, But their memories still remain In the tray of that old metal tackle box Where I now keep the Anglers’ Chain.

You can find kayaks on sale at sporting goods chains, big box stores and even mom-and-pop stores and gas stations. Many are touted as good boats for anglers. Lucian Gizel has used kayaks to catch big fish from the fresh waters of the Clinton River to the salty shores of British Columbia. His expert opinion is that the biggest mistake a novice can make is buying a kayak without first attending a demonstration and figuring out which boat best suits his needs.
Gizel, 47, an engineer at Cooper Standard Automotive in Novi, will give seminars and demonstrate how to rig and fish from a kayak during the Ultimate Fishing Show at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi.
Gizel, born in Yugoslavia to Romanian parents, started kayak fishing about six years ago after buying a boat to get some exercise.
"Pretty soon I realized that with a kayak, I could get into places to fish that you couldn't get to in other boats. And they were so light you could carry them and launch them almost anywhere," he said.
"I've always loved to fish, and the kayaks opened up a whole new set of opportunities. I started with bass and carp at Kent Lake (in Kensington Metropark) and expanded from there. Then I became a pro staffer for Ocean Kayaks and started doing demonstrations and setting up shows for them."
Ocean is a California company that was among the first to market sit-on-tops in the early 1970s after the company founder made his own from a modified surfboard. But the concept already had been patented by another Californian, Roy Grabenauer, who after World War II began making floats for scuba divers out of surplus jet aircraft aluminum wing tanks that he sliced lengthwise and fitted with a deck.
In the 60s, Grabenauer made his first 16-footer with shallow wells for a cockpit and dive tanks, following that in 1971 with the first true sit-on-top made in fiberglass.
Today, more than a dozen companies offer sit-on-top kayaks, but they are not all created equal, Gizel said. For example, the cockpit configuration and layout of one boat will fit one angler's body shape, paddling style and other needs better than other models.
"A kayak that's suitable for one person may not be the right boat for his friend," Gizel said. "A lot of kayak dealers are doing demo days now, and if you're looking for a boat, you should really go to one or more and try out as many as you can. You can fish from any kayak, but some are a lot better adapted for big water and some for smaller lakes and rivers."
I couldn't agree more with Gizel. My first fishing kayak was an Old Town Loon, a sit-inside that was so stable that with a bit of practice (and several dunkings), I was could stand in the cockpit to fly cast.
But the price of that stability was speed and handling, and I soon learned that trying to paddle the Loon into a 15-knot wind on a big lake was like trying to paddle a brick.
Because I was still wedded to the idea that a sit-inside was better in our cool northern waters, the Loon soon was replaced by a Wilderness Systems Pamlico, which was much faster and more nimble, albeit with much more movement.
I soon learned that in water over knee-deep, getting in and out of the Pamlico to wade was difficult at best and virtually impossible if the waves exceeded a foot.
Today, like Gizel, I fish from a sit-on-top, a 16-foot Hurricane Phoenix that's a bit long for small trout streams and unwieldy in fast water but is ideally suited for big lakes, ocean flats and large rivers.
Getting on and off an SOT is simple, and while they can be a lot wetter in a chop than a sit-inside, that problem is easily solved by wearing waders or a wetsuit. My Phoenix is also about as fast as many touring kayaks, and while that makes it a bit less stable than some flatter-bottomed SOTs, it takes only a half-hour or so to get used to it. But some people don't like that feeling of tipping and would be happier with a boat that's a little slower but more stable.
Newcomers can learn quickly how to avoid some mistakes made by the learn-as-you-go pioneers of the sport.
With his company sponsorship, Gizel now competes in some of the country's burgeoning kayak fishing tournaments on fresh and salt water, with the species ranging from smallmouth bass and catfish to redfish and tarpon.
What started as a new pastime has become an obsession. Gizel owns nine kayaks that he and friends use for different activities, and he's buying nine more to start a kayak fishing guiding business in the water around Detroit.
"I'm getting my (U.S. Coast Guard) captain's license even though you don't need it for kayak fishing," Gizel said. "What I'd like to do eventually is ... start a mother-ship operation like they do in other places."
That concept has been embraced in California, Alaska, Florida and in countries such as New Zealand, with anglers living aboard a large boat that carries a fleet of kayaks and takes the paddlers to great destinations over a number of days.
"We're 10 years behind the West Coast and the southern states when it comes to kayak fishing, but I think it will eventually become big here," Gizel said. "We have the water, and we have lots of fish."
Came across this quote online, thought it was pretty funny...
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and only one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Night fishing can be very easy and a lot of fun, or it can be a perfectly miserable experience. The difference comes in how you prepare for the trip. I have fished more times at night than I can count, and I learned quite a few tricks to make it easy and successful.
First of all, pick a night when the weather forecast is good. It is tough enough moving and finding things in the dark - bad weather just makes it worse, and a whole lot more dangerous.
Second, make sure your boat and engine are in good working order. Breaking down in the daylight is bad enough; you don't want this to happen at night. Trust this voice of experience on this!
Next, go through your boat inch by inch, making sure everything is in its place and secure. Go through each tackle box you plan to take and locate every item you think you may need. This may sound silly, but you need to study the inside of your boat and your tackle boxes. You need to have a visual knowledge of where everything is located. You will be tested on this during the fishing trip, so study ahead in order to pass! There are not many things as frustrating as trying to locate that pair of pliers, or those 8/0 hooks in the dark.
Speaking of in the dark, make sure you have several light sources. My current boat has indirect lighting all the way around underneath the gunnels. Have additional flashlights and a good high candle power beam stored dry and safe. Bring extra batteries, too.
Pre-tie enough leaders and terminal rigs to last you the entire trip. They don't go bad, so tying a few too many just means a few more for the next trip.
Probably most important, if you plan to anchor and bottom fish, is to get out before the sun goes down and get set up. Few things are more difficult than anchoring a boat properly over a ledge or reef in the dark.
As far as fishing methods go, I have two that work very well.
Night fishing becomes a matter of either smell or movement. That means fish must sense either wounded prey moving or they must sense the smell of food. So my two methods involve setting out a good chum line, fishing cut or strip bait in the chum, and fishing a live bait either freelined just outside the chum slick or on the bottom.
Fish frenzy brings on fish frenzy, so if you anchored in a known good area, the better the chum slick gets, the more the fish are attracted. Many fish are predominantly night feeders, like some of the snapper family. Others feed because of the frenzy. Whatever their reason for feeding, they are far more cooperative at night. You will find that the larger of the species will more readily bite at night. They become less wary, and can't see line or leader.
In the areas I have fished, yellowtail snapper, grouper, mangrove (or gray) snapper, mutton snapper, and an occasional king mackerel will be the predominant catch. Of course sharks are always looking for a free meal, and at night you are likely to encounter the larger versions of the that species as well.
Take along a first aid kit. I know we all have one on the boat, but double check yours before you go. Sometimes it's hard to tell the seriousness of a cut or puncture at night. Be prepared for anything.
Night fishing is wonderful if you approach it right. It is just a matter of being prepared.
Oh, about that first trip that Tony and I went on. We caught a few nice snapper. The old timers on the stern caught a boatload! Remember, it was a party boat. The stern was already taken by grown-ups, and the current would not let us get our baits into the chum slick directly behind the boat.
I learn something every time I fish. I wonder if that captain would have put us on the stern if he knew ahead of time that he would be in for a good tip......
Challenge yourself by starting a fishing life list
October 5, 2008
If you hear a fisher speaking of their life list, they aren't talking about the lifelong to do list from their better half.
Rather, they're speaking of the number of fish species they have caught over a lifetime of fishing. For some, the list is short. For others, it approaches the length of a child's wish list around Christmas. Some fishers could care less about their life list, often focusing on a relatively few species such as trout. For others, it's an obsession. Sounds like someone I saw in the mirror this morning.
While it might be argued that there is only one true life list, there are many variations on the theme. They run the gamut from everything caught in any manner anywhere in the world to very specific lists such as the number of species caught in Colorado on a fly.
One that I'm currently working on is to catch a Master Angler-sized fish on a fly for every species on the Colorado Division of Wildlife's list (http://wildlife.state.co.us/Fishing). While that may seem like a short list, the DOW currently recognizes 43 species. I've only got Master Angler awards for 13 of them.
Thanks in large part to the DOW, there is great diversity in the state's fisheries. Actually, there are a lot more fish species than those on the Master Angler list, as it doesn't even fully account for all the known game species in Colorado.
Appropriately, none of the 15 endangered/threatened species are on the list and most of the non-game species such as shiners, chubs, sculpins and shad are not listed.
That means the number of fish species in Colorado is likely more than 100. Now that's a life list.
For the truly adventuresome fisher, there are even greater lists with some 700 fresh water species in the U.S. Include saltwater and go worldwide and you're looking at more than 20,000 varieties.
At one per day, 365 days a year, that means I need a good 50 years to catch them all. Alright, some may not be catchable with a line and reel, let alone a fly, but it still seems to be a worthy endeavor.
Why bother with a life list? That's a lot like asking, "Why climb Colorado's fourteeners?"
The simple answer is, for the challenge. When you fish for everything that swims, it pushes the limits of your skills and makes you a better fisher. Plus, there are the bragging rights.
It's great fun when sitting at the table with fellow fishers swapping lies, err, tales to ask, "Yes, but, what is the biggest catfish you've caught fly fishing?"
While many of Colorado's fish are not viewed with high regard, each offers its own set of challenges, especially to a fly fisher. So, if you're looking to push your fishing skills, consider building up your life list.

Shellfish can act as a natural filter for bacteria
E.coli has been found in the sea in the Grouville area of Jersey.
Signs have been posted warning people not to eat wild shellfish they find in the area near the golf course or they could get food poisoning.
Shellfish can act as a natural filter for bacteria so it can collect in them. The water will tested again this week.
The Environment Protection Department said it would not affect people bathing in the sea, but added they should wash their hands thoroughly before eating.

There is an amazing phenomenon running through the fishing world faster than a Triton through an early morning haze. The new craze is the color red. Two companies with very contrasting views are leading the charge and the rest of the community is following their lead.
The company that started this fish catching assault is TTI Companies. They are the makers of Tru-Turn, Daiichi, StandOut and XPoint hooks. For several years, they have been producing red fishing hooks under the names "Blood Red" and "Bleeding Bait" hooks. Their concept was first discovered in a bait shop minnow tank. "It all started in my dad's tackle shop," explains TTI's New Product Manger, TJ Stallings. "He lowered different colored jigs into the bait tank. The minnows ignored all of the top colors, but bumped and chewed on the blood red color jig." Years later a friend of Mr. Stallings shined a laser in an aquarium and the fish began to follow the red light. Stallings said, "Every fish in the tank followed the little red dot like it was a circus act. That's when it hit me, hooks should be that color."
Biologists have a scientific reasoning for the effectiveness of Blood Red hooks. It is a phenomenon called "Gill Flash" When feeding, the gills of a fish become engorged with blood. This signals to other fish in the area that they are feeding. It is a lot like saying, "so long suckers, I have food and you don't." Nearly every hook company in the industry has attempted to jump aboard the "red hook" bandwagon, but none of the imitators compare to the innovators.
Even legendary lure companies like Strike King see the importance of the "Bleeding Bait" hooks. Strike King recently introduced its own line of "Bleeding Bait Hook Lures." They now offer Topwater baits, Crankbaits, Jigs, Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits and Jerkbaits with TTI's red hooks.
Is this just another marketing ploy to reel in more money from anglers or do these red hooks really work? Strike King's Consumer Relations Manager, Chris Brown said, "I don't believe it is a marketing ploy. We believe that the red triggers fish, we have done tests, TTI companies have done tests, it's a deal where it becomes a confidence bait. I fish a lot of tournaments and do tons of seminars each year. I use the red hooks from my cranks to my Spinnerbaits, to my soft plastics and terminal tackle and so forth. I have a ton of confidence in the red and I believe others do too. I go back to our product offering, we grow it each year depending on popularity and how consumers respond to colors, body styles etc. It seems to be the growing trend and for good reason." I have been using red hooks for a few years now and I love them. Reason being, THEY WORK. "I know people who dive and so forth and say the red disappears and it might," Brown explained. "For us the flash of red on the hook, on the spinner bait wire, in the skirt, we believe that flash is the deal, as the bait is used more the better it gets, the flash is little different than a nickel or gold flash and we feel that has a lot to do with it. Look at our new Bleeding Premier Elite Spinnerbait. Red hook, red skirt strands, red throat, red wire and a red tab on the trailing blade of the bait. That tab gives off an awesome flash. We believe that red flash mimics an injured baitfish and thus attracts an aggressive strike."
Approaching the "red" frenzy from an entirely different angle is Cajun Line Company. Rather than using the color red to cause their line to be more visible, Cajun Line Company is capitalizing on the colors invisible qualities. According to the company, the color red is the first color to start "disappearing" underwater. In as little as three feet of water, the color red starts to fade out. What this means is that the fish are only seeing the lure and not the line. When your bait is tied to the end of Cajun Line, it looks more lifelike and natural as it swims along. The more realistic you can make your lures appear, the more productive they will be.
Regardless of the reason anglers are choosing to use "Red" products, there is one aspect that remains constant, confidence. If you honestly believe that something works better than anything else and your catch ratio can back it up, by all means don't stop using it just because someone else doesn't like it. You have to use what works best for you and you only. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
