"Moose River Lodge"

07:48, 11-Dec-2009 .. Posted in ADVERTS .. 0 comments .. Link

Four of us stayed at the "Moose River Lodge" (907-394-2882) in Sterling, Alaska for 5 nights and spent around $85 per couple per night. We furnished our own meat, bread and fresh veggies, purchased at a nearby supermarket, otherwise the chalet was fully outfitted with laundry, gazebo, barbecue, condiments, pasta, coffee, wine, canned food and whatever else any person could want, including comfortable beds. The place was very comfy, clean, warm and sat within ten minutes of the Kenai River. We hired guides to take us salmon fishing for three days on the world-famous waterway and then drove 40-minutes south to Ninilchik where we caught the you-know-what out of great eating halibut.

BLIND FISHING PORTA-BOTE

16:55, 10-May-2009 .. Posted in ADVERTS .. 0 comments .. Link

Blind Fishing Porta-Bote

Blind Fishing Porta-Bote is the first of its type in the world. It was conceived and developed by Lawrence Euteneier, a person without sight.

Blind Fishing Porta-Bote incorporates mainstream and assistive technologies in a 12-foot fishing boat. The technologies coupled with Lawrence Euteneier’s extensive boating and fishing experience, allow Lawrence to navigate and fish on small bodies of water on his own.

Ontario Portable Boats contributed the 12-foot Genesis IV Porta-Bote.

A Folding, foldable, portable fishing boat By Porta-Bote. Folds to 4 inches flat.

The boat weighs approximately 70 lbs and can be folded flat to a thickness of 4-inches. In addition to the Porta-Bote’s obvious portability advantages, the boat was selected for its proven stability and strength. Its operating characteristics, construction materials and light weight also means it can be propelled and maneuvered safely and easily using either oars or a small electric motor.

Lawrence Euteneier, Craig Dill and his assistant Roger from Ontario Portable Boats

Propulsion:

A Minn Kota Maxxum 40 stern mount electric outboard was provided by Johnson Outdoors as the means of primary propulsion. The Minn Kota operates almost completely silently, and has the strength and innovative design to maneuver the boat under all conditions — from ploughing through thick weeds to running into strong winds.

Fuel Source:

The Minn Kota draws its power from a deep cycle 12V battery. The same battery is used to power the various on-board electronics. Should the Minn Kota fail or the battery die unexpectedly, oars are kept aboard for rowing.

Charge Control and Monitoring:

A talking voltmeter from the source Circuit city (catalogue 2218202) provides on-going status reports on the level of available electrical power. A 120V battery charger is used to fully charge the battery between uses, and plans are in the works to include on-board solar panels to charge the battery while underway.

Navigational Aids:

GPS

Humanware Canada is a sponsor of the Blind Fishing Boat project, and provided their talking GPS system called Trekker Breeze.

Trekker Breeze serves as the principle navigation tool. It permits the operator to navigate independently from one point of interest (POI) to another by means of audible directions spoken aloud (e.g. 18 degrees right, 138 meters). The operator is able to record specific POIs, and then navigate back to them as desired. POIs can also be downloaded over the Internet from other GPS users making it possible to go directly to known fishing hot spots.

Sonar:

Sonar sensors used in the automobile industry as reverse indicators were encorporated into the Blind Fishing boat. The sensors were provided by Trilogix. These sensors are attached to the bow of the Porta-Bote and are active at all times. Three different audible warning signals are omitted when an obstacle in the path of the Boat is detected. Slow beeps signal that an object is detected at 8 feet. Short beeps sound when obstacles are within 4 feet, and a continuous beep sounds when an object is within one foot. The audible sonar assists with both navigation and collision avoidance.

Two additional sonar devices developed for people without sight called the MiniGuide were provided by Sendero Group.

These hand-held devices have been attached to the bow of the Boat and scan ahead and to the Port and Starboard. The MiniGuides can detect obstacles up to 25 feet ahead. Each MiniGuide is connected to a small speaker located on each side of the operator to provide audio feedback in stereo; the Port speaker means obstacles ahead and to the left, and the Starboard speaker for obstacles ahead and to the right.

The operator uses an additional hand-held sonar device called K-sonar. The device was developed for people without sight, and provided for use in the project by Bay Advanced Technologies. The K-sonar unit allows the operator to scan the environment 360 degrees to assist with navigating around obstacles such as docks, rafts, and other boats.

Talking Digital Compass:

A Robotron Columbus Talking Compass manufactured in Australia, serves both as a directional indicator when the boat is stationary, and as a back-up navigation aid. Its primary purpose is to provide feedback when the boat is not in motion. While GPS provides geo-specific information all the time, it can only provide directional (compass heading) information when the boat is moving.

Depth Sounder:

Under the right conditions, the depth sounder will also be able to alert the operator to significant bottom structure in which fish may be residing. The depth finder also alerts the operator to approaching shallow water that the operator may not wish to traverse.

Locator Tags:

Locator tags are temporarily affixed to various stationary objects such as the doc and marker boys and rafts. The operator activates these audible tags with a wireless remote transmitter when the operator is within 25 feet. The tags then omit an audible beeping sound until the operator sends a second signal to the tag via the transmitter.

Communications:

Two VHF hand-held marine radios provided by “The Chandlery” are used for 2-way communications between the operator and the assigned spotter on shore. The radios are also used to listen to weather reports and the emergency channel. The radios allow for monitoring of three different frequencies at once. A cellular phone serves as backup and is stored in waterproof packaging.

On the open water in the Porta-Bote

On the open water in the Porta-Bote

Emergency Equipment:

A small portable air horn, flairs and flashlight are carried for use in signaling for assistance, along with an anchor, bailing bucket and first aid kit. The operator and any accompanying passenger’s ware an inflatable personal flotation device at all times.

Additional flotation seats and night running and anchor lights are also kept on-board along with an 8-foot telescopic doc hook and two oars. Once again, The Chandlery was instrumental in ensuring that the Boat is properly equipped.

Topmouth Gudgeon Survey

April also sees the broadcasting of another completely new show about where you rod licence money is spent. During our filming all over the country we discovered that the Environment Agency believes the biggest threat to our fishing is the tiny topmouth gudgeon, a fish that breeds faster than rabbits and can take over a venue in a matter of months.

The EA needs the nation's anglers to help them track down and eradicate the topmouth gudgeon before it takes hold. If have come across them or want to know what they look like, please take part in our survey HERE: www.onlinefishing.tv/survey/

LocoTV Newsletter
26th of March 2009

You could be a TV Star!!

LocoTV is all about community and, for the first time, we're offering
a chance for two lucky people to be part of a new TV series called
DriveWA as our presenters.

It's all about driving the adventure trails through the NW, Kimberley,
and SW of  WA and we need two presenters.

A "bushy" type of bloke. Someone genuinely Aussie who loves the
outdoors and can be both funny and engaging. 4WD experience
would be a big benefit.

A female presenter who wants to see WA and doesn’t mind getting
her hands dirty. She’ll need to be comfortable around blokes
and prepared to chip in as part of a team.

If you think you’ve got what it takes, email stevec@locotv.com.au
with a one page resume and any links to your previous on-camera
work. Experience is not essential but personality is!

Our partners in the series are Tourism WA, John Hughes,
DriveWA.com and ORE so you’ll be working with big players in
the industry and it is, of course, a paid gig.

Good luck everyone.

Trev's Weekend Review

14:10, 7-Mar-2009 .. Posted in ADVERTS .. 0 comments .. Link

Welcome to the Trev's Weekend Review

This week we're talking bedchairs, or to be more precise, bedchair bags.

If you are looking for an easier way to transport your bedchair to and from the bank, then read what the guys at
www.northwestcarp.co.uk have to say about the JRC Defender Bedchair Bag below.

Review of the JRC Defender Bedchair Bag
www.northwestcarp.co.uk

For many years I was of the opinion that bedchair bags were an unnecessary item of luggage; one of those additional extras whose only purpose would be to weigh me down even more and ultimately, give one more item of bulky luggage to find space for in my bivvy!

How wrong I was!

I did without for years, and transported my bedchair to and from the bank by means of a simple strap attached to the side of my bedchair. I thought this was the best and most effective way and took all the knocks, bumps, scrapes and damp patches that occurred on getting it to and from the swim as par for the course - besides, my bedchair was a JRC so it took all the abuse in its stride!

I must have fished this way for a decade or more, until on buying a replacement JRC bedchair I got a Fox Bedchair bag thrown in for free. My first thought was to sell the bag and carry on as normal, but as the bed was actually in the bag when it arrived, I thought I'd give it a go. To say it was a revelation is a bit of an understatement.

JRC Bedchair Bag

Pure Quality - The JRC Bedchair Bag

For years I'd had to endure a monster hike to get to one of my regular haunts (hence the need for lightweight transportation) which often included getting all my gear over three stiles dependant on which bank I wanted to fish. This meant lugging my gear over three barbed wire fences getting to the lake, and the same three on the return. It was a rare occurrence that I didn't snag at least one item on a fence each session! My bedchair was the usual suspect. I keep my sleeping bag and pillow folded up within my chair and it was often a sneaky exposed bit of this that just managed to find a barbed wire spike. Now with the bedchair bag, not only did its outer stop it snagging, but it kept everything safely tucked away inside and shielded my bedchair from all the abuse it got from the elements and myself each time out.

It wasn't all roses though, I found the build quality a little poor on the Fox Bedchair bag to be honest. The base was not thick enough so within a year the protruding arms on my bedchair had worn perfect holes in the bottom which then dropped it a couple of inches when you were carrying it. Also, the strap was a pain. As the zip only ran across the top of the bag, you could not get your bedchair out unless the strap was loosened to its maximum, and then each time I put it in, I had to then shorten it to its minimum in order to carry it over my shoulder. Once the holes in the bag were there, they were only ever going to get bigger, and so I knew I would need to track down a replacement. Picking which one was a no-brainer. I've had a number of JRC luggage items over the years, and none has ever let me down - some are still in full working order after ten years or more. That said, knowing the failings of my previous bag, I knew the new one would need to meet demanding criteria.

JRC Bedchair Bag

Two carry handles and a shoulder strap make transport light work

Happily, I can say that on my first inspection of the JRC Defender Bedchair Bag I knew I was onto a winner. The bag has a three-way zip which effectively allows you to peel the sides apart like a banana, and with both shoulder strap fixings on the same half, I knew I'd never have to alter a strap again. In addition its construction and use of materials was far superior to the Fox bag, and after only a few minutes of checking it out, I knew I'd be keeping it.

It's only since I've been using it regularly this past month or so that I've noticed additional features which make it even better than I had imagined. On the top there is a heavy duty carry handle, and there's another on the side three quarters of the way up. These two handles (which my previous bag didn't have) make getting it in and out of the car an absolute breeze. Before I'd have to lift it into the car by gripping the actual bars of the bedchair through the bag, rather than lifting the bag itself, but now I'm able to use these extra handles to get it in and out of the car/house in seconds. It might not seem like much of a feature, but for me it's made transporting a bulky item ten times easier - and for that alone it's well worth the price tag.

JRC Bedchair Bag

Heavy duty construction/materials will give years of trouble free use

There's not much more I can say about it really. The build quality is excellent, the heavy-duty olive green material will give years of trouble free use, and overall I give it ten out of ten - I literally can't think of anything I'd change.

Although called the Defender, I'm guessing it will easily accommodate other makes of chair. As I say, I pack my bedchair with sleeping bag and pillow all included and it's a nice snug fit, so you could pack even larger chairs without the sleeping bag, etc.

At the time of writing Trev's are doing the JRC Defender Bedchair Bag for just £22.99, which to me seems excellent value for money.

Designer glasses Spring Clean !

toolbar powered by Conduit
Once a year we have a Spring Clean !

Every year we delve into our boxes of "oddments" for Designer glasses to see what we have. When we decide that we have enough to make a reasonable selection - we pull them all together, and build a special offer page.

These are all original, genuine Designer Frames from the names that you recognise (and that we continue to sell on our site). What is different is that we don't usually have more than one of each - and so it is not feasible to offer them publicly - in fact it is not really possible to offer them online at all, as it has to be "first come, first served" - and then it is gone. So i'm afraid if you would like to bag one of these bargains - at prices typically 40% BELOW OUR NORMALLY LOW INTERNET PRICES - you will have to give us a call and make sure that we still have at least one remaining for you.

Included in the special is a selection of Emporio Armani and Diesel - but it does change, so check them out HERE  or click the "Clearance" banner to the right

Back in the "Olden Days"

Or maybe not even that long ago - before the days of NHS vouchers and certainly way before the advent of selling glassses online..........you used to go to the opticians for your eyetest, usually just after you either started bumping into things, or more usually when you couldn't quite read the number on the bus until it was just too late to stick your hand out..........and get your eyes tested.

When you emerged from the testing room, you would be shepherded to the side of the shop, and shown the "range" of glasses that were available to you. For most people (at least where I lived), that was it - the "complete" range of NHS specs ....from what seemed like gold-wire frames that in most cases crushed your nose and pinched a nerve, to the classic black plastic (actually very similar to some of the most trendy frames today - amazing how history repeats itself !)

For a trip down memory lane, and to read some more about the history of these spectacles - learn a few facts about where they came from, and how they were made on our full blog article (below)

  More Designer Choice

If you haven't visited recently - I think you will be pleasantly suprised by the number and quality of new designer collections that we have added.

Just in the last month (alright......since Christmas...) we have brought on current collections from Dolce&Gabbana, PRADA and Kookai to name just a few.

As with all of our other designer collections, they are all imported specially from Italy, and are "Current Collection" - even better, they are offered with our special no-quibble money back guarantee, and are eligible for discount codes and coupons.

We aim to continue to expand our offerings - in fact if there are specific brands or collections that you would be interested in, please drop us a line and we will be happy to see what we can do........we are always glad to hear from you !!

  Have Your Say!

You can leave your comments about each topic posted when you see this icon simply click on the icon or the link next to it which will take you to our eye care blog and you can leave your comments about the post.  We're having a little in house competition to see who can come up with the most comments throught the year so your comments are greatly appreciated by all of us.
Many Thanks

Deer Stalking & Salmon Fishing

Deer stalking, salmon fishing - be a Laird for the week

Deer stalking, salmon fishing - be a Laird for the week

Enjoy ing their "piece" and quiet on the hill.

By Rory Knight Bruce of The Field

The essentially Victorian sporting week of whisky, fireside conversation, a first salmon and a long stalk on the hill still thrives today – along with the chance to have a pot shot at being laird of all you survey.

Even in the distinctly chilly wind of Scotland’s new urban politics, the thought of a week-long stay in a Highland or island sporting lodge is still enough to stir the blood of any true sportsman. Nowhere in the world is it possible to experience comparable remote majesty, pampered solitude and sense of history.

The Scots of the “Brave New World” – the devolved parliament in Edinburgh – are attempting to rewrite the nation’s sporting past and are looking inwardly to their cities for their new identity. But the truth is that the essentially Victorian sporting week, one of whisky and fireside conversation, of early mornings on the hill and the triumph of a first salmon, is thriving as never before.

The saying goes that if you want to own a small sporting estate in Scotland, you start with a big one. No one would deny that such ownership is an expensive undertaking. As a result it is possible to rent a river, hill or moor, and the main house that goes with it, almost anywhere from Stirling to Sutherland for £4,000 to £25,000 for the week.

One of the great joys, especially for the first-time laird for the week, is that the stalker and indoor staff are likely to have been with the estate for generations. From them may be gleaned fascinating snippets of local history and gossip.

At Eishken on the south-east shores of the Isle of Lewis, stalker Chris Macrae is from the third generation, so he certainly knows his way around. This is a superbly appointed private estate, where the main house is reached by a seven-mile drive, stalking is approached by boat and thousands of purple acres without a single road lie before you.

“There is a great sense of history, the lodge is stunning and most of the staff are islanders who have been there for forever and a day,” says Robert Rattray of CKD Galbraith, who arranges sporting lets all over Scotland. Roddy Martine, the well-known author of Living in Scotland and The Swinging Sporran (the latter a Highland reeler’s bible), has been a frequent private guest at Eishken and other lodges, although he rarely stalks himself. “While the sporting day is down to the skill of the stalker, for all of us it is a day outdoors with our piece and the prospect of a hot bath and three-course dinner when we return,” he says. “To be a laird for a week is also helping the resident lairds. Several owners have told me it is like building bonfires of £100 notes.”

Equally remote and splendid is the Amhuinnsuidhe Castle and estate on the Isle of Harris, once the home of the Bulmer family. Here may be found traditional sea-trout lochs and river systems. Two of the river systems require a walk of an hour and a half where the reward is lochs that may not have been fished for years. Then there is the wildlife of eagles, black- and red-throated divers and, of course, the stags. There is plenty of room for up to 12 rods to go out each day.

But what if you have neither the cash nor number of friends to try your hand at these top estates? A new introduction in several places has been mixed-rod weeks where parties of two or four can go and meet fellow sportsmen. “This has been amazingly successful,” says Rattray. “I have been on them and it is lovely how, over a week, the parties become friends and then book to come together the next year.” Regulars at the Amhuinnsuidhe mixed-rod weeks are four men from the Stornoway Angling Club. “They save up and stay in the castle, fishing and living like lairds,” says Rattray. “It is their annual indulgence.”

THE ADDITION OF LADYFOLK
One change since the sporting weeks of Victorian tycoons poring over their malts and maps of the Empire is the welcome addition of the ladyfolk. Wyvis Lodge, in Easter Ross, is one of many estates on the books of George Goldsmith, who runs his sporting lets company from Edinburgh. He once had a request for a masseuse for the ladies while the men were on the hill. “I sent them three,” he says.
“A lot of estates are looking to provide activities outside the sporting context,” Rattray continues. This might include walks, visits to gardens or bicycle rides. At the Garynahine estate on the west coast of Lewis, on the initiative of the staff, younger guests have been known to fish, shoot grouse and then go surfing, giving a modern twist to a Macnab.

Having been a guest over the years at the Ardtornish estate on the Morvern Peninsula on the west coast for stalking and at Amat Lodge in Sutherland for fishing on the Carron, I have experienced first-hand the dissolution of woes that a week as a laird invokes. The week begins with a competitive edge from your host, but invariably ends with a seasoned feeling of well-being and friendship.

Nor have I minded that my wife is infinitely better at fishing than I will ever be. For some years my endeavours went unrewarded, to the extent that I even heard the wise and patient gillie at Amat tell my wife I was suffering from rod rage. It was a proud moment when a 10½lb salmon was entered in the gamebook with my name beside it on the Monday morning last year.

I have also spent two days alone at Novar in Inverness-shire walking-up grouse with a pointer. Not only is this done in a silence where you can hear yourself think, but there is a pleasure to be had in watching the pointer work as he casts up and down, like an old-fashioned weaver’s loom.
Far from the notion of absentee owners is the 33,000-acre Ardtornish estate, which can sleep from 20 to 40 in the big house, 70 if you include the cottages. “This is a happy, working, sporting family estate,” says long-term factor Angus Robertson. The gardens, restored by Faith Raven, whose family owns the estate, are a wonder to behold.

“The great thing about stalking here is that the hills are not too steep,” says Robertson. There are also salmon, sea- and brown loch trout and a sea-lined landscape of 60sq miles. For the week-long laird there is also provision for the estate to provide a cook or bring your own. Ardtornish is now run by Raven’s son Hugh whose wife, Jane Stuart Smith, oversees the award-winning White House restaurant nearby. For any sportsman with a gardening wife, this estate will captivate all parties.

Then there are the fathers-and-sons’ weeks where dads take their teenage boys to experience the thrill of their first stag. What can be more rewarding than seeing your own or others’ children enjoying themselves in the sporting outdoors? In their week they are learning not just respect for the quarry species but – all too rare these days – for their parents as well. “There is no better way to educate teenagers in the ways of the countryside,” says John Duncan of Roxtons, another leading company involved in sporting lets. I enjoy the story of one of my hosts who, having sent his daughter off to Ireland for four months to learn to cook, then employed her in his lodge to cook for 20 each night for a week.
But it is George Goldsmith who gets to the heart of what being a laird for a week really means. “The beauty is you can switch off. Your brain spins backwards and you have time to read. How nice to be able to wear the same shirt two days running without anyone caring, and to eat your squashed piece on the hill.”

SHAKING UP MANHATTANS
Are there extra responsibilities for the laird who is in charge for the week? In my experience, no – everyone develops a helpful rhythm of duties depending on their abilities. Mine is the washing-up, although one year I was deputed to bring the cocktails and each evening would be found behind the bar shaking up Manhattans.

One week-long laird I know delights in nothing more than going to buy fresh scones for his guests for breakfast. Their happiness is his pleasure, and no detail is too much.

So what are the essentials for a week-long laird to know? The first is to check when the week runs from. The next is to make sure everyone has the right licences and knows that there will be a target proficiency test before being allowed on the hill to stalk. Even the most hoary-skinned bachelor will be subjected to midge attacks, so pack your repellents or make sure there are plenty of smokers in your party. Send your wine in advance. “We do everything we can to match the ability of the party to the right estate,” says Goldsmith. “But then, of course, there are ‘Dead Mens Shoes’.” These are the weeks that come up only when a week-long laird has departed to the stalkers’ paradise in the sky. “My advice,” says Goldsmith, “is that to find an estate and week which suits you and hang on to it year after year.”

It is also important to find a stalker who suits you. At the 15,000-acre Gordonbush high-ground estate in Sutherland, Robbie Rowantree has been headstalker for 20 years. “We have plenty of first-time staggers inscribed in the gamebook, from knights of the realm to foreign dignitaries,” he says. Of the relationship with his week-long lairds, he adds: “It is the most interesting and intimate. The barriers which might exist just melt away.” Rattray agrees: “To be a laird for a week is a rite of passage.” It also helps to sustain Scotland’s sporting rural economy, valued at £500 million a year; even the Scottish Executive can’t ignore this.

Nor is it ever too late to start. This year I shall be taking seven friends to my wife’s home on Mull where we will stalk, fish, play golf, take the boat out for lobsters and take a long pull on life at the dining-room table. Passing boats will know when I am in residence, for I shall have hoisted on the flagpole not the Saltire but the Jolly Roger.

Let's go on a sporting break.
